I would recommend Homosexuality in the Opposing Viewpoints Series from Greenhaven Press. It's very accessible and shows both sides on various issues. I also personally like All the Rage: The Story of Gay Visibility in America by Suzanna Danuta Walters.
As far as non-fiction to take the linguistics spin I recommend Language and the Internet by David Crystal and You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation by Deborah Tannen.
Ronald Takaki's A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America is another good non-fiction book.
